Grand Ledge High School hosted DeWitt High School on Friday night in one of the area’s games of the week. Grand Ledge came away with a 28-14 victory in a game that was much closer than the final score showed. The game was played in cold and windy conditions, with some light drizzle coming down during the third quarter. Even with the weather, both sides of the stadium were packed as fans came out for Grand Ledge’s blackout game.
The game got off to a strange start. DeWitt kicked the ball to Grand Ledge to begin the game, and Grand Ledge fumbled the opening kickoff. It looked like DeWitt had an early opportunity to take control of the game, but that opportunity did not last long. After getting the ball back, DeWitt threw an interception to Grand Ledge. The turnover gave Grand Ledge another chance to start a drive, and this time they took advantage of it by putting the first points on the board.
Grand Ledge continued to control the game early. After scoring first, Grand Ledge scored again to take a 14-0 lead. DeWitt had trouble getting its offense going, while Grand Ledge was able to take advantage of mistakes and turn them into points. The game was still competitive, but the early turnovers gave Grand Ledge an advantage.
DeWitt eventually answered with a touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7. Grand Ledge responded with another touchdown, making the score 21-7. The game was not an offensive shootout. Instead, both teams relied heavily on their defenses and tried to take advantage of the other team’s mistakes. There were not many long scoring drives, which made every possession feel important.
Another key moment came in the second quarter when DeWitt fumbled the football. Grand Ledge recovered the ball and once again turned the turnover into points. The ability to capitalize on DeWitt’s mistakes became one of the biggest differences in the game.
DeWitt did not give up, though. The team scored again to make the game 21-14 and started to build some momentum. With the game only one score apart, DeWitt looked like it had a chance to come back and tie the game. The atmosphere in the stadium became even more intense as the fourth quarter continued.
Grand Ledge eventually had the chance to put the game away while trying to run out the clock. Facing a fourth-and-long situation, Grand Ledge came up with one of the biggest plays of the night. Instead of simply trying to punt or keep the clock moving, Grand Ledge broke off a big touchdown run that put the team ahead 28-14. The play gave Grand Ledge the two-score lead it needed and essentially sealed the victory.
The final score was 28-14, but the game was much more competitive than the score might suggest. DeWitt had opportunities throughout the game, but turnovers played a major role in keeping Grand Ledge in control. Grand Ledge was able to take advantage of those mistakes and make the big plays when it mattered most.
Despite the cold and windy weather, the atmosphere around the stadium was one of the best parts of the night. The blackout theme brought plenty of fans to the game, and the packed stands made the game feel like an important matchup. The light drizzle in the third quarter made the conditions even tougher, but neither team backed down.
For me, the game was part of Gilroy Media’s games of the week. Being there gave me a chance to watch a competitive high school football game and see how important turnovers and momentum can be. Grand Ledge ultimately earned the 28-14 win, but DeWitt kept the game close until the final minutes. In a game where neither offense consistently dominated, Grand Ledge’s ability to capitalize on mistakes and make a big play when it mattered most made the difference.
